Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat's brother Vikram Lamba has been booked after he accidentally fired a bullet while cleaning his licensed firearm, injuring a 25-year-old man in suburban Versova, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning, when Lamba was cleaning his pistol at his office, located on the seventh floor in Bhaktani tower. Rahul Bhatt, son of film-maker Mahesh Bhatt, was also present in the office when Lamba accidentally fired the weapon, they said.

"Vikram has been booked under section 336 of IPC (Act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of
others)," Additional Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil told media.

The Kannada Film Producers who met in Bangalore has decided that the actor Nikitha was responsible for the family feud of the Kannada film matinee idol Dharshan with his wife Vijayalakshmi. The Kannada film producers have been suffering a heavy loss on account of the Darshan's quarrel with his wife. He is not attending for the shootings regularly and the worst sufferers are the Kannada film producers, the meeting decided.

According to Vijayalakshmi's charge, that her husband Dharshan is in love with Nikitha. Following the charges levelled against the actress Nikitha, the producers have decided that Nikitha who was responsible for the unrest prevailing in the actor Dharshan's family, have decided that Nikitha should not act in films at least for another three years and the producers should not ask for call sheets from her.

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan on Sunday said he was greatly indebted to Kerala as it was Malayalam cinema that spotted the artiste in him, nursed and helped him come up, “forgiving” his “shortcomings” as an actor.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural of the ‘Onam (state’s harvest festival)—Tourism’ week celebrations organised by the state government, where Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan honoured the actor by presenting him a ‘ponnada’ (shawl) and paid glowing tributes to him as an artiste and socially-concerned individual.
“It was veteran Malayalam director K. S. Sethumadhavan who initiated me into my career as a young boy. Later, I was adopted by leading Tamil director K. Balachander,” Kamal Haasan said.
“I am at a loss for words to express how deeply I am indebted to Malayalis. It was they who helped me come up forgiving my shortcomings as an artiste,” he said.
Referring to the eye-donation campaign being launched at his initiative here on Monday, he said, “Now the people of Kerala ask me, what have you done for us in return. It is as an answer to this question this campaign is being launched.”
He said the eye-donation movement was part of his “humble endeavour” to reciprocate the love, affection and support the Malayalis had extended to him by seeking to do something above parochial considerations.
Sethumadhvan, who initiated Kamal into Malayalam cinema when he was just a five-and-a-half year old, was among those who felicitate him.
A light-and-sound show titled “Suvarna Kamalam” to mark Kamal’s 50 years in Indian cinema, conceived by eminent director T. K. Rajiv Kumar, was the highlight of the evening.

Superstar Rajnikant on Thursday came out in support of actor Ajith's remarks that the actors were being forced to take a stand on sensitive political issues.Ajith made this statement when the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi was accorded a royal felicitation at the Nehru Indoor Stadium on February 6.

Actor Vadivelu today issued a legal notice to his co-comedian and friend Singamuthu seeking Rs 25 crore as ‘damages’ for making wild allegations against him in an interview to a Tamil weekly recently.

He said that his friend comedian has published this article with a motive to bring disrepute to him, Vadivelu, in his notice, sought a reply from Singamuthu within seven days.

Vadivelu had recently accused his (former) friend and associate Singamuthu, who used to appear with him in comedy tracks, of cheating him of several crores of rupees by forging property documents and threatening him with dire consequences recently.

Vadivelu personally lodged a complaint with Chennai Police Commissioner T Rajendran seeking immediate action against Singamuthu and others who had allegedly cheated him in connection with the purchase of land.

Singamuthu, who sought an anticipatory bail fearing arrest in the case, recently gave an interview to a Tamil weekly, apparently as a riposte to Vadivelu’s allegations.

Vadivelu today sent a legal notice to Singamuthu seeking Rs 25 crore as compensation to the damage caused to his reputation.

‘Singamuthu had alleged that Vadivelu was responsible for the death of a servant maid and Vadivelu's manager. "They are baseless charges. It was aimed at bringing disrepute to me and tarnishing my image" Vadivelu said.

Hence Singamuthu should reply within seven days to the notice and settle for the compensation’, Vadivelu said. A notice has also been issued to the magazine for publishing the interview.

J K Ritheesh whose film Nayagan which ran for more than 100 days won the Parliamentary elections on a DMK ticket from Ramnad. Now he is donning a new avatar as the producer of the mega -serial, Aandal, for Kalaignar TV channel which will begin telecast from November third or fourth week. According to K.Suresh, Executive Producer, actress Suganya dons the role of an IPS officer.

Speaking to the Deccan Chronicle, Suresh said that Ritheesh wanted the role of Suganya should be different from the stereotyped women police officer. He was very particular that the character should not have one dimension of a tough cop but also must very kind to those who are good. Story writer M.M.S.Murthy and Raj Prabhu who has written the screenplay has woven an interesting plot on these lines, ” said Suresh.

When contacted J.K.Ritheesh who had just arrived from Delhi told DC “ My wife has been telling me to produce a serial like this quite a long time. When the story was narrated, first I spoke to the Kalaignar TV and they have promised me to provide me a slot in the primetime. I am happy the way the serial has shaped out,"

As per the storyline, Suganya as Aandal as a citizen takes up the cudgels against those who commit atrocities on women and the helpless. She realises that she has her limitations and hence becomes an IPS officer and achieves what she aimed to do. “The story also a romantic angle set in the backdrop of a village. Leading artistes like Yugendran, Devi Priya, Sumangali, Latha, Rishi and Sivan Srinivasan play pivotal roles” says Suresh.

Ritheesh juggling his time between his film career and his duties as an MP has now added this new venture to his busy schedule.‘ I keep in touch with my production office on what scene they are going to shoot for the day and sometimes I might suggest changes. I played an offbeat role of a police officer in Nayagan and that was appreciated. In fact the inspiration for the role of Aandal is my wife who without my help manages the home and my public life demands,” says Ritheesh.

"So far, shoot more than 100 episodes have completed on a very tight budget, ” says the MP who is confident that his debut venture on small screen too will click.

DEAL OR NO A DEAL – GAME SHOW IN THE SUN TV CHANNEL

The Sun TV Channel has started producing its mega-budget game show Deal or No Deal. The show is the replica of the Irish Endemol’s game show, and is being produced in four different languages by the Sun TV channel to make it a big success.

Irish Endemol was the first person to produce the game show for his country and at that time many different countries began to produce the same game show with different versions of their own twists on their general format. Endemol’s show’s format was carried out in the countries like Albania, Argentina, the USA and the UK. The persons from different walks of life, including some comedians and other artistes of the films, hosted the shows.

The Sun TV Channel’s Deal-a or No Deal-a (in Tamil) is being simultaneously produced in other vernaculars like Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam too; to suit the participants belonging to other states. The weekly show scheduled to be telecast on Saturdays and Sundays will be aired through the Sun TV Tamil channel on October 31. However it will be November 7th for its other vernacular channels, according to the channels official.

The contestant in the game can win up to Rs.50 lakhs, provided he is able to answer to all the questions that are asked in the game and choose the right-box containing a huge sum. There will be 26 sealed identical boxes placed before the contestants and the ‘banker’ in the game alone knows the amount contained in each box. Once the contestant points out the number of six boxes, the banker may allow the contestant’s to use his discretionary either to continue in the game or not. The banker would ask the contestants as “ Deal-a or No Deal-a in Tamil. The game will have ten rounds, it is learnt.

If the contestant wills to quit the game, he would be allowed to take certain amount of money as per the games rules and regulations.

In Amitabh’s Kaun Banega Crorepati and Sarath Kumar’s Tamil Kotteswaran one might have seen, a handful of persons might have won in the game, because if their answers go wrong then they would lose the entire money they had earned by answering for earlier questions. But this game show is different, says the officials. “ There are ample of opportunity for each and every participant to win in the show, depending upon their Luck and one need not be too intelligent to participate in the game” says the official.

“ Anyone can participate in the game and there are no restrictions. The contestants have a mixture of old, young, male, female, loud and quiet contestants,” said one of the officials of the game.

When the Deal or No Deal was introduced, it has attracted the attention from mathematicians, statisticians and economists as a natural decision-making experiment. A team of economists has analyzed the decisions of people appearing in European and US episodes of Deal or No Deal and found, among other things , that contestants are less risk-averse or even risk-seeking when they have seen their expected winning tumble. In their follow-up article they find that contestants behave similarly in ten different versions of the show, despite large differences in the amount at stake; amounts to be evaluated in relative terms, for example in proportion to the initial average and not in terms of their absolute monetary value. The research project received a great deal of media attention of the USA and the UK.

There were more than a lakh of applicants, when the channel invited participants through its channel network and Suriyan FM. Only a few thousands were selected to participate in the show, says the official.

Shankar who was one-time assistant to the cinematographer Jeeva is directing the show. Earlier he had the experiences of organizing various game shows. He did his Visual Communication from the Loyola College. There has been a plan to organize the game show on all the important festivals and birthdays of various leading film personalities, politicians and other great leaders.

Another interesting thing about the game show is that 26 models from Delhi and Mumbai are brought to the show to guard the 26 cash boxes, and it seems the channel had spent a huge amount as salaries for them.

Rishi, another Visual Communication student is the anchor of the Tamil game show for the Sun TV Channel. He has acted in a K.Balachander’s tv serial.
He has also done anti-hero role in Ananda Thandavam film. Film Star Mukesh hosts the Malayalam game show while actor Sai Kumar anchors the show for Kannada and Telugu game shows.

Only the time has to tell whether the show is viable or not, despite being lakhs and lakhs of money given to the prizewinners.

The 100-hour Kharokee comprising only film songs began here in Chennai on Wednesday evening around 2.30 PM. Suresh Joachim, known for his second rank in the World Guinness Record began his songs with his orchestra at the Chennai City Center at Dr.Radha Krishna Salai. The songs would be carried by him, however, a ten-minute rest will be allowed to Suresh to have a wash and cleanse his face. The Kharokee will last till Sunday evening. If my father is assigned any duty or job, he would take care of those things and would finish them in an appreciable way. This I have notice on several occasions, and I too want to follow his ideals.

When asked about her the modern style with modern dresses, she said that she had been wearing it quite a long time and it was her usual custom to dress like that. “ I can’t change my style, since my childhood and it is like asking a person why he brushes his teeth every day in the morning.

“ My father used to advise me always to work sincerely and also cautioned me not to become jealousy over one’s praise. These advises are like weapon saving me.

When asked about her sister Akshara, Shruthi said she had been concentrating on her studies, besides she had been learning Kuchipudi dance. “After finishing her studies, it is she who has to decide and choose her career” says Shruthi.

Three decades ago, Late actor Shivaji Ganesan staged a drama Vietnam Veedu which was later made as film with the very same title. The film's story and dialogues were all written by Vietnam Veedu Sundaram. After thirty years of its release in theaters, the great comedian Y.Gee.Mahendra wanted to stage the play, by doing the role of Prestige Padmanaba Iyer. Though the comedian could not make out the role as was done by Shivaji Ganesan then, this renowned comedian makes the scenes of Shivaji Ganesan with the actress Nithya Ravindar ( does the role of actress Padmini), brings out tears. Not a single dialogue of yesteryears was deleted from the script. Even the salaries, telephone bills everything has the same price index of seventies. You may laugh now, if you say that your salary is Rs.1200 and your landline telephone number having five digits. What I am trying to say is the script which was written for Shivaji Ganesan was removed from the shelves of Vietnam Veedu Sundaram and is being done by the comedian Y.Gee.Mahendran. Before this Vietnam Veedu could make out its 100th stage play, Y.Gee. Mahendran's erstwhile stage play Swadesi Iyer was staged 100th time. Actor Kamal Hassan, Rajinikanth arrived at the function and felicitated the comedian's mother, Mrs.Y.G.Parthasarathy who has successfully running Padma Seshadri group of schools.

Vietnam Veedu is a story which could be enjoyed with the family and many of the late actor Shivaji Ganesan's fans, if they wish to brush of their past memories could do so, by watching the stage play.

Film producer allowed to withdraw money deposited in court
The Madras High Court has permitted A.Chandrasekharan, proprietor, Sri Saravana Creations, Nungambakkam, to withdraw Rs.5 crore, deposited in the High Court for the release of the Hindi version of the Tamil film ‘Ghajini.’
Earlier, Mr.Chandrasekharan had filed a civil suit seeking to restrain Geetha Arts Division (GAD) of Allu Entertainment Pvt. Limited, Chennai, and A.R.Murugadoss from producing and releasing the Tamil picture ‘Ghajini’ in Hindi or any other language other than Telugu and to restrain them from interfering with his copyright for the Tamil film. By an order in December last year, a single Judge granted interim injunction restraining GAD from releasing the Hindi version.
On a challenge to the said order, a Division Bench suspended the single Judge’s order subject to the condition that GAD deposit Rs.5 crore to the credit of the appeals in the High Court. Accordingly, the sum was deposited and the film released.
Now, GAD approached the court for a direction to permit it to furnish bank guarantee in the place of the deposit. Mr.Chandrasekharan also filed an application seeking for a direction to permit him to withdraw the amount.
In its order, a Division Bench comprising Justices D.Murugesan and C.S.Karnan said the grant of interim order suspending the order of the single Judge was purely discretionary considering the facts of each case and by exercise of such power, the court had directed the deposit of Rs.5 crore.
As Mr.Chandrasekharan had already been armed with an order of injunction, which order of course was suspended subject to the condition of deposit of Rs.5 crore, in the Bench’s opinion, Mr.Chandrasekharan should be permitted to withdraw the amount by ensuring security of the amount. “We are forced to take the above view having regard to the fact that at least by virtue of the interim order, the appellant (GAD) had transacted nearly Rs.100 crore and on the other hand, the first respondent (Mr.Chandrasekharan), even though obtained an order of injunction, had to be content only with the suspension of the said order.”
The court was, therefore, bound to ensure the security of the amount in the event Mr.Chandrasekharan was allowed to withdraw the same.
The Bench said it was of the considered view that Mr.Chandrasekharan should be permitted to withdraw the amount subject to furnishing of bank guarantee in the name of the Registrar-General of the High Court to the credit of the appeals. The court allowed Mr.Chandrasekharan’s petition.

Chennai, Mar 11: Charging him with demeaning its members, the ‘physically challenged welfare association’ here has asked director Bala to apologise for the scenes depicting the mute and blind in poor light in his film, Naan Kadavul.

The association in a statement threatened legal action if the director did not come out with an apology and delete the offending portions in the film. Association representatives ‘Engineer’ Gopinath and Ramesh Veeramani said the film projected a negative image of the physically challenged, as though such people had no option but to take to begging or prostitution to eke out a living.

There have been any number of success stories born out of hard work and honest enterprise, but Bala ended up killing his visually-challenged heroine just to save her from the central character played by Arya, the association said.

Bala in an interview said his film was a true picture of the organised beggary racket and was inspired by first-hand account.

The child artiste's father Mohammed Ismail who is a TB patient said that his son had taken on the world and won and added that he was proud of his son and demanded more money and also a house as promised by the producer. " I think they will not fulfill the promises that was made before my son was taken for the shooting of the film" said Mohammed. He also said, that still he was living in the slum, and the Oscar had not catapulted his family financially.

The latest demand comes amid reports that the child actor, who was plucked from a Mumbai slum to act in the movie, will get less than 20,000 pound from the producers of the eight Oscar-winning film, which grossed over 123 million pound at the box-office, the Daily Mail reported.

The 10-year-old Azharuddin Ismail, who played the young Salim, the brother of lead protagonist Jamal in "Slumdog Millionaire" returned to his shanty home on Thursday after a dream visit to Oscar awards and Disneyland.

Ismail, who lives in a shack and makes a living by selling scrap, said the money given to his son was not "enough" and they needed more immediately.

Azharuddin and Rubina Ali, who hail from a slum in Mumbai played young Salim and Latika in the film.

‘Smile Pinki’, the tale of an UP girl and her fight against the social stigma of a cleft-lip, won the Oscar award for Best Documentary (Short).
Directed by Emmy-award winning Megan Mylan, the film was shot in Mirzapur and Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh, reports PTI.
Elated at the victory, Mylan thanked the eight-year- old girl, who could not smile due to her cleft-lip and was teased as “othkatti’ (one with a cut lip) for letting her tell her story.
“Thank you Pinki. Thank you for letting me tell your incredible story,” said Mylan while accepting the Oscar. Pinki then underwent a simple surgery with the help of social workers that almost changed her life.
Mylan also thanked the NGO Smile Train, which funded the surgery and Pinki’s Los Angeles trip to attend the Oscars. Mylan also thanked Dr Subodh K Singh, who performed the surgery.

Rahman leaves Hollywood awe-struck
Rahman became the first Indian to win two Oscars -- Original Score and Original Song ('Jai ho') -- for his music in the Danny Boyle-directed movie, which bagged eight honours at the 81st Academy Awards on Monday.

Asked about criticism from some quarters that his musical score such as 'Jai ho' was not among his best, he said it was up to "individual sensibilities".

The songs in fact "matched the Western abilities" and was even seen as the "best" in those standards, he said.

Rahman shrugged off criticism that "Slumdog Millionaire" was a "prejudiced view of the West about India" and said he saw it as "an underdog redeeming himself.

"As an artist, I see the truthfulness. However, different viewpoints are welcome," he said.

On his Oscar acceptance speech about choosing love over hate and whether it was a political statement in "troubled times", Rahman said he wanted to say those words at a time when people are divided on various grounds, including religion and caste.

Noting that the statement was "close to the heart" he said people stood divided on these grounds, among others.

To a query on whether part of his speech in Tamil had any connection to the ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka, Rahman evaded a direct reply, but said, "I certainly wish for peace in Sri Lanka."

On offers from Hollywood, he said a few have come his way, but did not elaborate, quoting confidentiality.

Allaying fears of Indian audiences that he might move into Hollywood completely, Rahman said he was willing to work in good subjects in Tamil, Hindi and other languages. "I always enjoy the extra freedom in Tamil," he said.

To a query, he said he felt the Aamir Khan-starrer "Lagaan" could have won Oscars when it was nominated a few years ago.

Asked about the tense hours culminating in the ultimate moments of glory on Monday, he said he had a "sleepless night," on Sunday.

On what he had done with gifts received for winning the awards, he said with a grin, "I returned all of them since they were champagne bottles."

Raj TV Channel the second largest Tamil satellite television company - is foraying into the Kannada language now. The company enters market with music and a news channel.
“The Kannada music channel will go on air next month while the Kannada news channel will be launched only in April,” channel’s director M. Ravindran said.
The channel will go in for the launch of Malayalam and Telugu. The company has been postponing the decision of launching its Telugu channel and suddenly it had decided to launch Kannada channel first.
It will also be the third Kannada music channel after SS Music and U2 from the Sun TV Network.
Last year, the company had announced a Rs.4-crore investment for the four music channels, with an expected revenue of Rs.5 million per month from its advertisement
He also said Raj TV’s Telugu entertainment channel, Vissa, will be re-launched with new programmes and game shows.
Though the Tamil satellite channel market is buzzing with the launch of two comedy channels (Adithya from Sun TV and Siripolli from Kalaignar TV), Ravindran ruled out any such plans from Raj TV.

Kamal Hassan is all set to play Naseeruddin Shah's role in 'A Wednesday' which will be remade in Tamil and Telugu.

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal will enact Anupam Kher's character in the bilingual film.

Both the versions will be produced by Kamal himself and would be directed by Chakri, a US-based filmmaker and a good friend of the actor.

The actor was at the FICCI Frames convention to speak on 'Focus South'. He said he and Mohanlal wanted to work with each other for a long time.

Kamal said there was nothing wrong in remaking a good idea.

"I had remade Govind Nihalani's 'Drohakaal' in Tamil a few years ago," he said adding the film will go on floors very soon.

Kamal said he had liked 'A Wednesday' very much. "A friend of mine who watched the film told me that I suited Naseer's role very much and should have done the film. So I decided to remake it," he said.

When asked what preparations he would make to perform the role, Kamal said Naseer has already done my homework. I have now only to perform.

Kamal, who completes 50 years in the film industry next year, said he is a reluctant actor. "I always wanted to become a technician. But, filmmakers like K Balchander persuaded me saying that I will not make much money. Now, I feel star Kamal is the financier of technician Kamal," he said.

He admitted that lack of communication among different language film industries in the country was a tragedy. He said finding parochial cracks and driving wedge within different sections of the industry is a bad trend. "Chennai or Mumbai is just an address, I am an Indian actor-filmmaker, he said.

Kamal also lamented that the name Bollywood was here to stay. He said words such as Kollywood for the Chennai film industry was disgusting.

Kamal said he shrugs off complacency within him by constantly practicing introspection. "When I am told I am larger than life, I know I am 5.8 and a half," he said.

When asked about the dominance of Hindi cinema over regional films, Kamal said audience like to watch films in their own language and it was the reason why regional cinema was thriving. "We are a diverse country and everybody has a level playing field," he said.

Speaking about the Southern film industry, Kamal said the producers council of southern states had passed a resolution prohibiting corporates from entering film production in south India. "The corporates were even dissuaded from becoming the council members," he said.

Many thought that this was a very parochial attitude but the south industry is in good health in times of global recession and even the critics of the council's decision have admitted that it was a good decision," he said.

Microeconomics have set behavioural patterns and should not be seen in such a context, he said. Kamal also felt vested interests were delaying technology. We have to accept progress and be part of the change. There is no use of blaming opportunities for our failures. Business improves with content. Platforms of exhibition needs to be increased, he said.

Vennilla Kabbadi Kuzhu has been engraved around Kabadi, a gallant sport in rural Tamilnadu. Mari ( Vishnu), Ayyappan ( Vairavan), Sekar (Nithin), Murthy (Sundar), Appu Kutty, Subramani ( Suryi) and Pandi are the seven youths who belong to a Kabadi team. But they are always the losers. The story is set in a village near Pazhani. It revolves around a group of seven rustic youths, passionate about the game of 'Kabadi. During the temple festival the neighboring village team is invited for a match. But the match ends up in a feud.This team earns the wrath of the villagers. This team goes to Madurai to participate in the Kabadi match but they do not get the chance. Then coach Souda Muthu (Kishore) comes along and changes their fortunes. He infuses confidence in them and motivates them to achieve success. In between Marimuthu falls in love with Saranya Mohan who comes to the temple festival in the village. The grand 'Thiruvizha' scenes leave inedible imprints on the mind. The director Susindhran has to have consciously avoided the gang of gun-toting baddies, crass comedy or silly romances. He had cleverly manipulated the romantic scenes in the Kabadi oriented film. Vishnu is impressive. His boy-next-door-looks help him bring out the emotions of a rustic, uneducated youth, keen to make a mark in his favourite sport. Saranya Mohan sans any makeup suits the role well. The comedy by Suri and Appu Kutty adds strength to the film. Kishore has done justice to the role.

Alazgan Tamil Mani goes with his daughter Bharathi in search of his son in Kasi whom he had abandoned fourteen years back on the advice of the astrologers. The mater tells Arya that he is not bound to have any attachments with anybody and for the time being asks him to accompany his father. Arya who comes back with his father to his native place wants to be in seclusion. He even avoids speaking with his mother. At this point he wipes out the profitable beggar mafia business using physically disabled young, old and children. Pooja is a blind beggar. Arya goes back to Kasi saying that he is God and that he will wipe out the evil people as well as the people who do not have the base to live.

Arya has excelled right from the opening scene to the end. Let it be Arya standing on his head or in the court scene. He makes the dubious god men to tremble. Pooja as the blind singer is incandescent and her outstanding performance will be talked about, as the film belongs to her, especially the lead to the climax.

Krishnamurthy and Alazgan Tamil Mani will remain in the hearts.

Maestro Ilayaraja has been the most intensifying factor for Bala's success and 'Naan Kadavul' wouldn't be an elision.

It also seems that Bala would have lifted the crux from MGR starrer Nadodi Mannan. The bunch of beggars handpicked by Bala is amazing whether it is eunuch or the midget boy.

On the whole Nan Kaduval is an embodiment.

Ace director K.Balachander who is come to known through his stage plays, is again entering to enact stage plays.After a thirty years of gap, the KB is once again switching over to stage plays and is going to inaugurate a new play Pournami with Delhi Ganesh, Fathima Babu and Renuka. The play is likely to be inaugurated on April 18 at a grand function either at the Chennai Music Academy or in the Mylapore Fine Arts Club. It is to be remembered that Malayalam Super Star Mohanlal has been doing stage plays which bring a lot of people drawn towards watching the stage plays. When the time for electronic media preventing the general public in entering local sabhas to watch stage plays, the sudden change in the attitude of the ace director, KB to enact stage plays will revive the habit of watching the stage plays as was done some twenty years ago by the general public.
A versatile scriptwriter, a prolific director and shrewd producer, Balachander has to his credit over 100 films and had shaped up the career of several artistes including Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan. Considered a ‘Man with Midas Touch’, he owes everything to stage plays, from where he made his beginning several decades ago.

‘Passion and love for the theatre brought me back here. Since I was busy with my prior commitments, I couldn’t pursue my love for drama for a long time. I managed to squeeze some time for this now,’ Balachander says of his comeback.
He strongly feels that the three different medium of entertainment - theatre, cinema and television are bound to coexist. ‘One cannot destroy the other and at any given time the public will see what it wants.’

Balachander is also unfazed by sceptics to his comeback. When I ventured to do television serials, everyone discouraged me. But I proved that my decision was right with successful tele-serials and many followed suit’. So his critics better get ready to eat their words.

On the challenges involved in staging a play today considering various avenues of entertainment are available on tap, he says, ‘the content is the key. If you narrate an interesting story in a gripping manner, you will have audience. There are umpteen number of themes that can be handled for stage plays like political satire, social injustice, family drama.’

KB’s popular plays like Server Sundaram, Naanal, Ethir Neechal, Neer Kumizhi, Navagraham and Major Chandrakanth were later made into films and they were hits.

He feels that the time has come now to infuse energy into theatre and his reentry would add filip to it.

Sun TV Network has launched its new comedy channel ``Adithya`` from February 8th. Many wondered whether the channel would create an impact on the minds of the viewers who used to wish run after tv serials and some films which are shown in the Sun TV Channel. As expected the new channel has become a pet for many who delve into various difficult problems and pathos.
With the arrival of the new comedy channel Sun TV Network that originally began as a Tamil satellite channel has now expanded with other channels in other languages including Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Chennai Super Kings, a reality show which had tie up with Star Vijay will be launched from February 21st on wards. As part of its recruitment drive of persons ages ranging from 8-12 years, the recruitment drive auditions will be taking place in Chennai, Coimbatore and Trichy. Those who win in the auditions will be considered as the Chennai Super Kings, never mind if they win even in Coimbatore and Trichy.

A comedian who had made rib-tickling laughter with his mannerisms in comedy like the Western comedians and the comedian who made all of us weep through his penchant for acting through the film like Neerkumuzhi and proved his excellence as villain in Michael Madana Kamarajan and the comedian who had not wasted not even a single frame in Edhir Neechal adding his comedy through the films like Server Sundaram, Thiruvilaiyadal, Kadhalikka Neramillai died this morning at a Private Nursing Home in Chennai after a brief illness. Known as Nagesh, who had matched his acting with the two super film actors like Sivaji Ganesan and MGR and other film heroes like Jai Shankar and Ravichandran in the later years. Nagesh, whose original name is Gundu Rao changed himself as Nagesh after he came out of his house in his younger days stayed in a room along with Sri Kanth and Major Sundararajan. He started as a stage artiste in a drama representing the Ramayana and did the role of a stomach-pain patient. People began to laugh whatever he uttered in the public and Nagesh sometime ago used to say, "the comedy lies in me. I never knew, that there are a lot of things in me to do comedy". He always used to say, that if at all he had earned money, it was from Sando M.M.A.Chinnappa Devar who produced a lot of films then. On taking a lot of money in a box, once the comedian told me, that he wanted to go back to his native place Dharapuram, which is very close to Coimbatore. While his car was passing through a bridge, he saw a lot of people were crowding at a person who was in sub-conscious stage, the comedian thought. But, the very same person was his mother who had breathed her last.

Nagesh never belonged to any political party and he had never grown up as a great actor with the support of any politician individually to come up in his life. He had acted in more than 1000 films which include Kannada and Telugu vernaculars.

He was always used to give bried comment always about death and used to sing the song for which he had acted in Tamil film Neer Kumuzhi. Aadi Adangum Vaazhkkai yada, Aradi Nilamey Sondhamada. ( In life one will play and finally reach his six-feet tomb). At any time, the actor never had the ego, that he was the best comedian. He loved the comedy acting of Thengai Srinivasan.

The actor's combination with the late comedian V.K.Ramasamy and Manorama was appreciated in those days. He was the only comedian who was dearingly called the late actor MGR as Vaa and Poo. MGR liked the actor calling like that, Nagesh used to say. However, both maintained a decent friendship. The actor never wounded anyone's feelings till the day he acted with Kamal Hassan and Kamal liked the actor's acting very much.

Released on December 25, 2008, the film has now been dubbed into Malayalam and released in Kerala by Central Pictures.

Panchamirtham's script is based on the popular television serial 'Mayavi Mareechan', telecast on Sun TV. The storyline is taken from the Ramayana. It revolves around Hindu mythological rivals Mareecha and Idumban who both love Mandakini. But Mandakini loves Mareecha. In this film, Mareecha and Idumban come alive and take sides in the battle between love and greed!

Prakashraj plays Ravana and Jayaram, Mareecha. Director Raju Iswaran dons the role of Idumban, a demon who gets punished by Mareecha. Samiksha is the heroine. Recently, actress Namitha's scene in a swimming dress was filmed by the Telugu prouducers who produce the Tamil Bill. There are two heroines including Anushka. The shooting of the film, as if Namitha taking bath in a swimming pool at Vizag was filmed. In the shooting when Namitha appeared in glamour dress, the film unit began to pinch their eyes on the body of Namitha. Knowing this, Namitha immediately called everyone as 'Anna' as elder brother and asked them to close their eyes till she took a dip in the holy swimming pool, in which the Telugu film, Billa was filmed.

Chennai, Sep 10 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's nephew and Sun TV's Managing Editor `Murasoli' Selvam was today summoned by Chennai Police's Central Crime Branch (CCB) after Tamil daily Dinamalar filed a complaint of `provocative' coverage against the channel, police said.

Selvam is the second top official of the Marans-run channel to be summoned by police. Sun TV news editor Raja was summoned last night.

The summonses followed a complaint lodged by the daily with the state government yesterday alleging the telechannel had "misrepresented" a cartoon of Prophet Mohammed carried by the paper's Vellore edition recently.

However, Sun TV communicated to police that Raja had been on leave for the past 20 days, and Selvam, brother of the late `Murasoli' Maran, was responsible for news content during the period, following which the latter was summoned today.

A number of Muslim outfits staged violent demonstrations in front of the newspaper's Vellore office last week. Some protest demonstrations were also held near the newspaper's office in Chennai.

The daily subsequently issued an apology for publishing the cartoon.

The CCB had registered a case under Sections 153 (provocation with an intent to cause riots) and 503 (criminal intimidation) of IPC.

Sun TV is part of the Sun Network, owned by Kalanidhi and Dayanidhi Maran, the estranged grandnephews of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. - Agencies

Onam Thirakatha a film which was released on last Friday turning out as a controversial film. It has been said, the story of the film is based on the romances between Kamal Hassan and the late actress Sri Vidhya who died in Kerala due to cancer.

Malayalam film Writer and Director Ranjith who knew the actress when she had been acting in Malayalam films. Sri Vidya is the daughter of noted Carnatic Musician M.L.Vasantha Kumari.

It has been said Ranjith who has produced this film purely based on the live history of the laste tragedy-queen, Sri Vidya. In Thirakatha Prithvi Raj, Anup Menon and Priya Mani have acted with the story fully revolving around the romance of an actress.
The film's promotional posters also feature Srividya's photo along with Padmarajan and Bharathan, two of the greatest writer- director team of 70's and early 80's, the 'Golden Age' of Malayalam cinema.
Director Ranjit in television interviews is quite candid that it is loosely based on Srividya's torrid affair with Kamal. However he goes on to add that there has been similar romances between leading men and their heroines from time immemorial.
The buzz is that Ranjit had access to Srividya's personal diaries she maintained. At one time Srividya was to publish her memoirs for a Malayalam weekly, but strangely it never saw the light of the day.

Newcomer Anup Menon is the superstar Ajaychandran, while Pritviraj plays a young director Akbar Ahmed a new age director who plans to write a script about the romance between Ajay and Malavika and her subsequent disappearance.
Thirakatha is one of the best films to have come out from Kerala in recent times. The climax, which will leave a lump in your throat is the highlight of the film, and Priyamani a spitting image of Srividya is excellent as she is able to bring out the various mood

TAMIL FILM DIRECTOR SEEMAN HELD FOR INFLAMMATORY SPEECHES

Batlagundu (Tamil Nadu) (IANS): For the second time in two months, Tamil movie director Seeman was arrested at a shooting locale here on Friday for allegedly making inflammatory, secessionist speeches, police said.

"The arrest was made after repeated complaints from Congress leaders alleging denigration by Seeman of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's sacrifice and his continued inflammatory, secessionist speeches," a police official said.

"These are our continuing measures to curb suspected anti-national activity," Director General of Police K.P. Jain told IANS on phone from Chennai, 400 km north of here.

Seeman's car was set afire by miscreants in a southwest Chennai suburb.

"He has been under attack for inciting violence in Tamil Nadu in support of Sri Lankan Tamils. Now everyone can see who is indulging in this reprehensible violence," film director Manivannan told reporters after seeing the damaged vehicle.

Directors Seeman and Ameer had earlier been arrested in October for reportedly making speeches inciting violence during a protest demonstration in Rameshwaram in southern Tamil Nadu to express solidarity with the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka.

The directors denied the charges and claimed they were only protesting the attacks on Tamils in Sri Lanka. The duo was released shortly on conditional bail and ordered to stay within the Madurai jurisdiction.

MDMK leaders Vaiko and M. Kannappan were arrested on similar charges the same month and then released in November.

Political parties in Tamil Nadu have expressed anguish over the killings of innocent Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka by its military establishment during the ongoing civil war to quell the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

So far over 100,000 civilians have been killed in the strife since 1983, including former Prime Ministers of India and Sri Lanka - Rajiv Gandhi and R. Premadasa respectively allegedly by the LTTE - charges denied by the terrorist organisation.

India is separated from Sri Lanka by a narrow expanse of water called Palk Strait.

VIJAY AND VADIVELU IN RUSH HOUR

Tamil cinema is growing. And it's growing at a really fast rate. There have been directors that brought Hollywood stories to Tamil cinema. Most notably A.R.Muragadoss's Ghajini (Memento in Hollywood), Gautham Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram (draws inspiration from 1994's Forrest Gump), Prabhu Deva's Pokiri(daws inspiration from The Departed), and Mani Ratnam's Nayagan (The Godfather). These are just some films. Now that the budgets for films is increasing, we might get to see the big exposure that Hollywood puts on their films in Tamil! Here are some movies I would like to see get made in Tamil:

I Am Legend- If there is one actor who can do a better job than Will Smith, then it's Surya. He's one of the only actors who can do this much intensity in a film. You can also put Asin as the guest role of the mother who comes to rescue the main character. It's a big film, and considering it'swith a big budget, Shankar should be director. Music should also be A.R.Rahman.

Ocean's Eleven- A heist film in Tamil would be great! Imagine if Vijay, Ajith, Surya, Vikram, and some other big stars in Tamil cinema came together and made
this remake! Also you can put a lot of the top actresses as well. This film could possibly be the best cast that any tamil film has made! Director should be Venkat Prabhu, because this is his kind of movie. Also music should be Yuvan Shankaraja.

Cast Away- If Kamal wanted to make one last film before he retired, then he should make this film in tamil. The whole film would show him and what he does to survive on an island. It needs an actor who can make the audience sit and watch one person for more than half of the movie. I think Kamal could do this without any problem! Direction should be Gautham Menon to give a Hollywood touch, and music should be Harris Jeyraj(It would be nice to see the Menon-Jeyraj combo one last time).

Scarface- I think Rajini or Vijay should do this one. They could do it Billa style, or just do it regular Indian style. Direction should be K.S. Ravikumar and music should be Vijay Anthony. I wonder if they make Scarface survive in the remake....

The Pursuit of Happiness- This definitly should be remade. Probably Surya or Ajith can do this movie, or even younger actor like Arya or Jayam Ravi. Direction should be A.R. Murragadoss. Music should be the young Dharan.

Rush Hour- Imagine Vijay and Vadivelu as two cops trying to track down gangsters in India and abroad. Well, this film would be a great remake with a nice mix of action and comedy. Direction should be fast, so it has to be Dharani. Music should be Vidyasagar.

There are so many other movies I would like to see happen, but that is just another dream.

NAYANTARA MAKES COMPLAINTS WITH THE PRODUCERS COUNCILS

Actress Nayantara has filed a complaint against the producer of Payya film, for removing her from acting in the film as heroine. According to sources, the actress was fixed a salary of Rs.1.5 crore to act in the film to be directed by Lingusamy. The director who met her at her residence, gave Rs.20 lakhs as advance to act in the film. Because, she has been asked to act in the film, the actress refused to act in various film, including the one Malayalam film to which she gave her callsheeets.

After some time, the director who again met her told that she should forego some money to act in the Payya film. But, she refused to forego even a single rupee, because the agreement with her was already reached by the producer. She also said, the director had to fulfill the contractural obligations. She reportedly, had told Lingusamy, that she forewent a lot of films' opportunities, due to Payya and she had lost money crores of moneys that were offered to her to act in other films.

Now the actress came to know that actress Tamanna has been fixed to act in the new film. She also came to know, that Tamanna had accepted the offer for a lower salary than that of hers. Hence, the actress had refused to pay the advance money paid to her. The director Lingusamy had also filed a complaint with the Film Producers' Council.

Tamanna, and other film unit members of the Payya had gone to Hyderabad for the film shooting. The Council has make to the decision whether the actress has to return the advance money or the producer has to take back Nayantara as per the agreement or both the parties should come for a compromise, is a question of time who should win in the controversy.

SUN PICTURES TO PRODUCE ENTHIRAN WITH RAJINIKANTH

Sun Pictures, will produce Enthiran, superstar Rajinikanth’s blazing rising film directed by Shankar. Earlier, the Sun Pictures produced Kadhalil Vizhundhen, Thenavattu and Dindigul Sarathy.

The film was about to be produced by K.Shankar who went along with his unit and Rajinikanth recently to the USA and produced a part of the Enthiran film. Due to global recession and economic meltdown, the producer could not continue the film and hence dropped the idea of producing it for sometime, till the Indian economic scene becomes alright. In the meanwhile, the SUN TV Channel Kalanidhi Maran who had met the director wanted that the Sun Pictures was interested in producing the film with Rajinikanth. Hence, there is a change in the production unit.

A. Danny Boyle, an English filmmaker came up with the much appreciated film 'Slumdog Millionaire' with the background score of India's very own A. R. Rahman. The film was about a poor Mumbai youth who takes part in a game show to win the first prize and eventually become a millionaire.

The London Critics Association has lauded A. R. Rahman's talent by awarding him the prestigious London Critics Award for the year 2008.

'I am happy with this award and I'd like to credit Danny Boyle for extracting appropriate music from me. Danny has been so meticulous with his work that both of us have become friends now', said Rahman.

Tata sky crosses 3 million Subscribers

MUMBAI: The DTH juggernaut continues. Tata Sky has pocketed three million subscribers, quickly adding the last one million over just seven months.

The three-million landmark was reached within 27 months, indicating how rapidly the Indian direct-to-home market is growing.

Dish TV, the market leader, has 4.5 million subscribers while Big TV claims to have touched one million within 90 days of launch. Sun Direct has roped in two million customers, 99 per cent of which are from the four southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kannada.

Launching its DTH satellite pay-TV service in August 2006, Tata Sky reached one million connections by the end of the first year of operations.

VETERAN DIRECTORS TURNS HEROES

Two of the doyens of Tamil Cinema the 78 year old K.Balachander and 67 year old Bharathiraja are playing the male lead in a Tamil film produced by top commercial director Shankar's 'S' pictures.

The shooting of the film titled Rettai Suzhi has started in Tirunelveli and it is being directed by Thamirai, a former associate dialogue writer with KB's Kavithalaya. The music is by Karthik Raja, and camera is by Chezhiyan.

It is not for the first time the two veteran directors are acting. In the early 80's Bharathiraja has acted in his Kalukkal Eeram and three years back in Mani Ratnam's Ayudha Ezhuthu.

K.Balachander has also acted in his own Kalki, Poi and many of his TV serials.
